Morro Bay: a Little Slice of Heaven

A few hours outside of San Luis Obispo, I called hotwire to book our hotel for that night. We ended up getting a nice looking place called The Inn at Morro Bay. We had to drive a ways off the 101 to get there but the drive was nice, windy and tree-lined, so it was a very pleasant experience. We got to Highway 1, but then the directions told us to exit and head out onto very small roads. We entered a fog area, not too surprising, but felt a little funny when we entered a state park and passed a camp grounds. Where was the hotel?? Perhaps the Inn is the fancy name for a cabin in the park? The GPS on my phone told me we had arrived but all we saw were trees and tents since we couldn't see much around us because of the fog.

But then, Aaron saw what at first glance might have been a mirage: a golf course. As a sailor to a lighthouse, Aaron drove directly toward the course and was happy to learn that it was a public course. After driving up to the course, we noticed the sign for the Inn across the street. Serendipity!

We checked in and since I had just made the reservation that day, they did not have us in the computer. Yet, they took our word ( I showed the guy my confirmation email on my phone) and gave us a sweet room. It was a suite with couches and a fireplace overlooking the pool and the bay which we couldn't actually see until morning. There once was a hot tub on the large porch but they must have removed them to save water. We marveled how a random hotwire hotel room could turn out so well yet again!

Since we were in the middle of nowhere, we went to the Inn's restaurant for dinner. It was a bit like entering the Twilight Zone. It was a nice restaurant; however, the decor was certainly left over from a different era. The early 70s maybe?? Giant arm chairs for dining chairs, funky art deco on the walls and the clientele consisted on foreign hotel guests, all of whom were also from a different era. Aaron wanted to ask the waiter about why the place was so freakishly out of date, but I talked him out of it. At least the meal was good, though the chocolate lava cake had no lava...grrr..

The next day, Aaron awoke early to golf which he will describe. I slept and read until he returned and we ate breakfast overlooking the lovely water of the Bay. There were definitely some animals swimming around in the water. Otters? Seals? Not sure....We made our way to the wharf area and walked around the shops. We had some yummy pastries at a bakery where the owner baked everything herself. It was nice lingering in another small town before having to return to reality.

Eventually, we had to say goodbye and made our way back to the 101 for the return to LA. Sadly (for Aaron), we passed through Oxnard and the Herzog Winery and kosher meat restaurant in between lunch and dinner so we couldn't stop for a meal. But we did stop in Thousand Oaks at a very nice mall with a great food court and bathrooms that featured nursing rooms! Cool! We ran into some traffic and crazy drivers which was our rude awakening back to LA. OY!

All in all, it was a beautiful and successful trip full of gorgeous natural beauty, good food, friends and family, the love of the open road and most importantly, time together as we eagerly anticipate Love Bug's arrival.
