Pics: from the desert soldier memorialgoats that surrounded the car
I realized it my last post, I forgot to mention my Shabbat in Beer Sheva/Sansana with the Gold family. I went to visit my dad's friends from rabbinical school who live in Metar near Beer Sheva. I got a ride from one of my neighbors whose parents live there too. We had such a nice time! They took me to see a beautiful memorial to soldiers who died defending the desert in 1948. It was really special because of its artistry and connection to the desert itself. We also wandered around Ben Gurion University which has a nice campus. There were few students because of the student strike and because it was Friday. We ate a great lunch at a local place which Baruch loves...
We spent Shabbat with their daughter, Shira, and her lovely family in a small community called Sansana. They are trying to build their community but the land is being disputed in court, so they live in trailers in the meantime. It is a funny, rag tag, loving, safe, modern religious place that feels like camp. Especially where Shira and Benny and their five kids live on the hill overlooking the JNF forest. It was a great Shabbat being with them but it was the first time in a long time that I was not counted as a person for the birkat hamazon blessing after the meal. It was shocking because women are totally equal in all parts of life but religious it seems. Still, I loved spending time with them and the kids!
